Melbourne Cup
Today, the entire country stopped for about 5 minutes to watch the Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cup is a famous horse race that is an annual tradition the first Tuesday in November - similar to the Kentucky Derby. They said that it was guesstimated that 25,000 people took off work in Perth alone. Melbourne has made it an official holiday so they were all off from work and school. However, our school had to go on, but there was a big luncheon for the teachers and we got to dress up. Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE themed things. So on top of the big hats and dresses, we also put in money for a sweeps. The administration picked out the horses for everyone, and thanks to Crime Scene, my horse, I came in second place and won $40. I was so excited! I never win anything. The kids were hyped up about the race as well. I had my class draw from a bucket with all the horses in it. We are discussing money this week and it's value. They each have their individual bank account with play Australian money. They started with $5.00 yesterday and can earn money or lose money from certain behavioral things. I told the kids that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners would get money to add to their bank account. They were stoked then! As soon as the race began, the students were watching intently and I had one of my kids say, "Come on (whatever his horse's name was), Daddy needs a new computer!" I about died! He was so excited about the possibility of earning the fake money. These kids keep me laughing at the things they say!
