Entertaining Australians
This morning we had our fortnight (every 2 weeks) assembly which was a talent show for the entire school. There were about six different student acts which included a Michael Jackson dancer (one of my students!), a ventriloquist that was only 8 years old, a sister act on drums and keyboard, a jazz/pop dancer, a small band with teenagers, and another one of my students that danced freely to Boom Boom Pow. The student acts were pretty entertaining, but to spice it up, a few of us teachers decided to provide the students with surprise acts. For about two weeks now, we have been working on two different acts for this talent show. The Year 3 teachers, an education assistant, and Mary all performed an ABBA medley... costumes and all. It was hysterical... especially the fact that it was all women and two of them were playing the role of a man - Benny and Bjorn! They memorized all the lyrics and had choreographed the entire thing. Last term in music, the kids learned all sorts of ABBA songs so they were really impressed at the first surprise act. The second surprise act included my cooperating teacher, Jacqui and me. We decided to have an American/Australian sing-off/dance-off thing. We planned our skit out by starting with each of our national anthems and being as serious as we possibly could. Then, we immediately jumped into the fun songs of our countries (Born in the USA, We are Australian, Sweet Home Alabama, Tie Me Kangaroo Down, American Woman, and Land Down Under) and made it as funny as possible. We had props and dances for every song and the kids went nuts! They especially liked the end of our skit when Jacqui took a piece of bread with Vegemite on it and slapped it across my face. It was so nasty smelling and the flies started to swarm around me shortly after. This assembly went longer than any other they've ever had. I think the kids really enjoyed it considering that they had no academic learning to do before recess. When Jacqui and I were on lunch duty, we were walking around the oval (football field) the kids came up to us and were just in awe of us. We were like H-list (Hocking!) celebrities.
After school, I had signed up for a pilates class that they started today at the school. It was good to work on muscle strengthening, but I know I will probably feel it in the morning. Overall, it was a very fun day, but I'm tired. I need to run through my lesson for tomorrow seeing as though I am getting observed by John (my supervisor).
